Been reading Outliers by Gladwell. I think that for a large part of my life, I believed that success was directly linked to the amount of work you put into something. Outliers indicates that success is determined more by circumstance than personal effort. Some of the keys to success include having a passion, finding a niche, doing something well, and having the desire for something different. These, combined with timing, networks, and circumstance are what made Bill Gates and The Beatles so successful. A million things roll through my head as I start to apply some of these concepts to my life. Will I be successful? Well, let's not dwell on that too much.
One thing that is for sure is that Santa Barbara is such a great place to live. The mediterranean climate, the palm trees, the coast, and the the food really add up to make SB one of the most unique places on earth. While SB is not exactly the cheapest place to live, there is a lot to appreciate. Being on vacation for the past and coming week, I realize how much I have taken living here for granted. There is so much beauty, character, and life that I don't always see sitting in a cube all day.
